MANILA, Philippines — After months of teasing fans with hints such as “buong PIlipinas” and “Christmas,” Miss Universe Philippines 2018 Catriona Gray finally unveiled her heavyweight national costume at the National Costume Show of the 67th Miss Universe beauty pageant held on December 10 in Nong Nooch Tropical Garden in Pattaya, Thailand.

Called “Celebrate, Fight, Enrich,” the “Luzviminda” or Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao-inspired costume represents the country’s diversity and three major islands, with Catriona asking help from artists and tribes from the three major island regions to create her colorful and elaborate costume.

“My national costume is a collaboration between Jearson Dimavivas, the designer of my national costume sa Binibini din, at saka Jojo Bragais,” Catriona bared in an interview with Philstar.com

Carlos Buendia, who has a theater and arts background, also helped design the garb.

Reports said that the costume’s backdrop features a mural by University of the Philippines’ artists at the back, while the Christmas-inspired front is by parol makers of Luzon.

In a post by Vogue Thailand, where Catriona’s costume has been featured alongside select others, the Bicolana beauty shared that her bodysuit has been beaded with intricate patterns inspired by the Pintados from Visayas, while her T’boli brass headpiece, belt and cuffs are all from Mindanao. Customized footwear embroidered with indigenous textile patterns complete the look.

Catriona’s costume has been featured in multiple posts by Vogue Thailand. She is also featured in Miss Universe’s many promotional videos for the National Costume Show and the pageant in general.

Miss Universe Philippines 2017 Rachel Peters, Catriona’s predecessor, was also featured in Miss Universe’s promotional ad for the National Costume Show.

Catriona belonged to the last group of 93 contestants that presented their costumes. She vies to become the fourth Filipina to get the Miss Universe crown on December 17 in Impact Arena, Bangkok, Thailand.
