MANILA, Philippines — Internationally-acclaimed Filipino singer-actress Lea Salonga got her first Grammy nomination.
On her social media accounts, Lea announced the nomination of the “Once On This Island” cast album in the prestigious award-giving body for music.

In another post, Lea said she could not believe that she has been nominated, so she shared that she went to the Grammy website to confirm the news.

“Has to actually go to Grammy.com to see if it was true. And it’s true! I am officially a Grammy nominee!!! It may be a while before I get any sleep tonight! So thrilled to share this with my Island family. And that at 47 years old, one can still have a first!” she wrote.
The theater actress was a principal soloist in the album and she shares the nomination with other principal soloists Phillip Boykin, Merle Dandridge, Quentin Earl Darrington, Hailey Kilgore, Kenita R. Miller, Alex Newell and Isaac Powell, and producers Lynn Ahrens, Hunter Arnold, Ken Davenport, Stephen Flaherty and Elliot Scheiner.
On her Facebook account, Lea shared the music video of “We Dance,” the musical’s opening number.
“Celebrating our #GrammyNomination by playing this, the opening number of the show!!!” she wrote.
Lea played the goddess of love Erzulie in the Broadway musical “Once On This Island.” She received a standing ovation from the audience on her last performance last June.
The musical was awarded as Best Musical Revival at the 2018 Tony Awards held at Radio City Music Hall, while Lea received an award as Best Featured Actress in a Musical from a website's annual Theater Fans' Choice Awards.
At the 2019 Grammy’s Best Musical Theater Album category, “Once On This Island” will compete against the albums of “The Band's Visit,” “Carousel,” “Jesus Christ Superstar Live In Concert,” and “My Fair Lady.”
