CCP opening in 1969: Pomp & circumstance
In September 1969, the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) opened with, as they say, pomp and circumstance.
Guests of honor were then California Governor (later President) Ronald and Mrs. Nancy Reagan. They joined Pres. Ferdinand and Mrs. Imelda Marcos in cutting the ceremonial ribbon, attended by who’s who in government and private sectors.

A lavish production number, Isang Dularawan, was presented for five days: Sept. 8, 9, 10 and Oct. 15, 16.
The CCP was one of the pet projects of then First Lady Imelda Romualdez Marcos.
Cast of Dularawan
Dularawan was described by Dom Bernardo Ma. Perez, OSB, as a combination of three words: dula (drama), awit (song) and larawan (picture). ‘The term signifies a concept of Filipino theater which is at once radically new and deeply traditional.’
Lolita Rodriguez
The first Dularawan was billed Salakot na Ginto, developed from an idea and evolved by the First Lady herself. It received the whole-hearted support of the CCP board of trustees: Fr. Horacio dela Costa, SJ, Antonio Madrigal, Ernesto Rufino, I.P. Soliongco and Andres Soriano Jr.
Vic Silayan
The brightest minds in Philippine art and culture collaborated in coming up with Dularawan, topbilled by Vic Silayan, Vic Vargas and Lolita Rodriguez. Truly spectacular and extravagant. It drew materials from ancient Filipino myth and history.
Over the years, until this very day, artists of national and international renown have performed at the CCP, earning Mrs. Marcos the title ‘Patroness of Art and Culture.’ — RKC
