Lea Salonga’s ‘Once on This Island’ wins at Tony Awards 2018
NEW YORK — Filipino pride Lea Salonga adds another feather on her cap as her musical “Once on This Island” bagged the Tony Awards 2018 for Best Musical Revival at Radio City Music Hall.
The new Broadway production of Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty bested “My Fair Lady” and “Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Carousel” in the category.
“Once on This Island” is a musical that follows a peasant girl in the Antilles who falls in love with a young man she saves from a car crash. When he returns to his wealthy family on the other side of the island, four gods guide her through a test of her love against prejudice and hate.
Lea plays the role of one of the gods, Goddess of Love, Erzulie.
On her Twitter account, Lea posted congratulatory message to her friends for a job well done.
“Today is going to be the craziest of crazy days, and I may not be able to see my friends from other shows because of shuttles and busyness. So to you all, I send you tight hugs and congratulations on jobs excellently done! Tonight, let’s all celebrate!!! @TheTonyAwards,” the theater actress tweeted.
Before the awards night, the “The Voice PH” mentor also received an award days ago as a popular website's annual Theater Fans' Choice Awards awarded her as Best Featured Actress in a Musical for her performance in the musical.
"Oh my!!! Thanks to our fans for all the island love!!!" she tweeted.
Salonga shares the award with the play's Tony Award-winning costume and set designer, Filipino-American Clint Ramos, reportedly the "first person of color to receive a Tony Award for Best Costume Design of a Play" in 2016. — Videos from YouTube/The New York Theater, Facebook/Tony Awards
