MANILA, Philippines — Janine Berdin, a 16-year-old singer and actress from Lapu-Lapu, Cebu, was hailed as the champion of hit “It’s Showtime” singing contest “Tawag ng Tanghalan Season 2” on June 2 at the Aliw Theater.

In a series of interviews with the press following her win, Janine revealed that she joined the contest to help her grandmother, a cancer survivor who suffered from stroke. She said she will use part of her prize money to help her grandmother, who has to undergo kidney dialysis twice a week, and also to help her siblings finish studies.

From being a simple student, Janine said she still cannot believe she won at “Tawag ng Tanghalan.”

According to her, she chose Sampaguita’s “Nosi balasi” to be part of her final songs as answer to critics who say that she cannot hit high notes and does not give a clean execution.

She said that Filipino artists like KZ Tandingan, Bamboo, Rivermaya and Eraserheads are her biggest musical influences.
