Sharing his talent as he tours the world

MANILA, Philippines — Finally, a star performer. The spotlight is solely on Reuben Laurente.

It all started with his first series of singing competition victories throughout elementary school. And not long after, he joined the children’s choir at their local church. He conscientiously participated in more talent search contests, until he was recruited as a member of The CompanY, the Philippines’ premier vocal group.

Soon after, he initially auditioned for the Royal Caribbean International’s Manila search, and became a part of the song and dance ensemble entertainers on board various ocean liners criss-crossing the high seas, exploring the exciting ports of call.

Reuben expressed his appreciation to Royal Caribbean for nurturing him as he performed Broadway and West End-esque adaptations of musicals before discerning audiences at sea.

“Thank for believing in my craft, for the training from the vocal and stage directors, to the dance instructors and choreographers, on to the casting specialists and the rest of the team. It is because of them that I realized this is what I wanted to do next as a performer.”

Just like a back-up dancer, or perhaps a component of a quartet, or even a stunt double would aspire of, this young man had achieved a dream not many are capable of.

Today, he is where he wishes to be. And this year, he finally headlines his first break as a solo artist, as he tours the world while sharing his talent with others.

In this new chapter in Reuben’s life, he takes a leap of faith and has signed up with Don Casino Productions, a Miami-based agency responsible for his stints on distinct cruise lines, while Noel Ferrer handles his local shows.

“These production outfits basically get me the nightly shows, and the liner flies me out of Manila and back,” he explained.

With this made-in-heaven setup, he gratefully expressed that he can now enjoy more precious time with his beloved family and friends at home.

Not one to rest on his hard-earned laurels despite this top-of-the-world headliner, Reuben has kept his feet on the ground. “Surely, I simply can’t be complacent — I always need to explore potential possibilities to upgrade my skills for more attractive opportunities. And with continuous prayers, I can enhance my act and expand my horizon, first as a person and then as an artist,” he shared with a warm smile on his face.

Reuben still makes time to practice as often as he can. “I remember a friend in the industry, Tricia Amper-Jimenez who shared with me that the unforgettable phrase isn’t ‘Practice makes perfect’ but rather ‘Correct practice makes perfect.’”

Ruben admitted to certain lapses in his career and reflected on them as worthwhile learning experiences.

“Missing my blockings, messing up my steps and even forgetting my lyrics — these slips did happen during live performances. The reasons were countless — perhaps I was unreasonably nervous or maybe I was not completely focused. But when these mishaps occur, you just have to muster enough courage to still continue your performance. Even if you did it wrong, still be strong!” he pondered.

For beginners who wish to pursue new heights, Reuben imparted some advice.

“Know your own strengths and weaknesses as a performer. Get as much training from seminars and workshops. Go on YouTube if you don’t have other resources. But beware: be discerning on which mentors to follow.”

In awe of the achievements of Reuben Laurente, leave it to the unstoppable Filipino talent. With avenues of expressions present and platforms to get discovered on, the success of a performing artist is not a question of if, but only a matter of when.
