MANILA, Philippines — Young rapper Abra scores his first Best Actor nomination at the 41st Gawad Urian for his performance in the movie “Respeto.”

Known for his rapping style and ability, Abra impressed critics in his first acting role as Hendrix, a young man who dreams of being a hip-hop icon.

Abra is competing against Nonie Buencamino ("Smaller and Smaller Circles"), Timothy Castillo ("Neomanila"), Noel Comia Jr. ("Kiko Boksingero"), Allen Dizon ("Bomba"), RS Francisco ("Bhoy Intsik"), Jojit Lorenzo ("Changing Partners"), Empoy Marquez ("Kita Kita"), Sandino Martin ("Changing Partners") and Justine Samson ("Balangiga: Howling Wilderness").

Interestingly, veteran actors John Arcilla and Arnold Reyes did not make it to the Best Actor category for their performance in “Birdshot.” Nonetheless, they compete against each other at the Best Supporting Actor category together with Robert Arevalo ("Ang Larawan"), Romulo Caballero ("The Chanters"), Dido De la Paz ("Respeto"), Pio Del Rio ("Balangiga: Howling Wilderness"), Nor Domingo ("Respeto"), Ronwaldo Martin ("Bhoy Intsik") and Jess Mendoza

Abra started his career as a Fliptop artist on YouTube. He rose to fame after his song "Gayuma" made it to the mainstream. He also made a collaboration single with Arci Munoz, KZ Tandingan, Chito Miranda, Raimund Marasigan and Julie Anne San Jose.
