Drew Barrymore spills secrets behind eating ‘corpses’

MANILA, Philippines — Before starring in “Santa Clarita Diet,” Hollywood star Drew Barrymore lost weight following a vegan diet.
But as an “undead” or a zombie in the show, Drew’s character, Sheila, has to not only eat human flesh but also act like she enjoys eating it. How does she do it?
“The fake human bodies, they look so real because they’re made so well, but they taste so horrible!” Drew told Philstar.com in a roundtable interview in Makati City on Monday afternoon.
According to her, the fake corpses are “always made of something different” but “they always taste awful.”
“I really have to sell them like they’re the best that I’ve ever eaten! I wish that they’re like burger or pizza. But it’s instead, tastes like fermented rubber, so it’s pretty gross.”
Her co-star in the show, Timothy Olyphant, said that they were having so much fun on the set that he never realized how disgusting the bloody scenes were until he sees them on Netflix.
“When we watch it later, I was shocked at how bloody it was. It’s as if I didn’t even notice it the whole time we’re shooting. We have scenes where we’re covered in blood. They’re so lovely and sweet!” he declared.
Although Timothy and Drew have gotten used to the gruesome parts, Drew recalled a scene when she really got sick to her stomach.
“I really got sick in the fruit bowl. That’s my kind of humor,” she said, recollecting an episode wherein she had to seem like having a great time munching on intestines and other internal organs presented like in a fruit bowl.
She said she really eats the fake intestines and cadavers, which is partly why she gained weight.
“I got down into a size 4, and I’m like a size 12 now. So, I really have to work out!” she enthused. “I was actually a vegan when I got into the show because I was like trying to lose 20 pounds. As soon as the show’s over, I’ll like go berserk in pizza and pasta and hamburgers and I gained it all back.”
After the series, among her goals is to get her sexy back.
“I know what I really have to do and I really did it! I did it two years in a row. I lost 20 pounds before season one or during season one and before season two. I lost it during the course of the show because she’s become alive and thinner, sexy and sexualized and more alive. But I know what to do. I did it before, I’ll do it again!”
