Is Enrique Gil the new Captain Barbell?

Released

MANILA, Philippines — In a recent interview with Philstar.com, actor Enrique Gil revealed that he will no longer become the love interest of his love team partner, Liza Soberano, in Star Cinema’s upcoming movie adaptation of Mars Ravelo’s “Darna.”

“I’m supposed to be part of it, but then last minute, they said I couldn’t be part of it anymore,” the actor told Philstar.com during his launch as the new Samsung J2 Pro endorser.

Nonetheless, Enrique said he does did not feel bad because Star Cinema presented him with a better offer.

“Makikita n’yo rin. Malalaman n’yo rin, soon. Maybe after ‘Darna’,” the actor revealed.

When Philstar.com asked if the offer is him portraying another popular comics superhero, Captain Barbell, the heartthrob just smiled and shrugged his shoulder as a sign of refusal to give more details about the project.

In previous years, “Darna” movies are usually succeeded by “Captain Barbell” flicks, even in TV series. Sometimes, Darna and Captain Barbell can be seen in the same movie, just like the ones that starred Sharon Cuneta as Darna and Edu Manzano as Captain Barbell; and another movie with Bong Revilla as Captain Barbell and Regine Velasquez as Darna.

Sometime in 2007, GMA also reportedly planned to come up with a “Captain Barbell Meets Darna” movie to be portrayed initially by Dingdong Dantes and Karylle, then by Richard Guttierrez as Captain Barbell and Jackie Rice, Rhian Ramos or Marian Rivera as Darna.

But GMA’s plans were shelved because in 2012, ABS-CBN has acquired the rights to do a movie and a TV remake of Ravelo’s works, including Darna, Captain Barbell and Dyesebel. — Video by Kat Leandicho
