Star Cinema speaks up on 'Darna' being 'shelved'

MANILA, Philippines — Since actress Liza Soberano has been busy taping her new fantasy series “Bagani” together with love team partner Enrique Gil, and also with co-stars Sofia Andres, Matteo Guidicelli and Makisig Morales, there are rumors that Liza’s revival of the popular comic book superhero “Darna” will no longer push through.

But in reaction to gossip and news reports saying that “Darna” has been shelved, Star Cinema sent a press statement to Philstar.com on Thursday.

Mico del Rosario, Star Cinema’s advertising and promotions manager, said about “Darna” being shelved: “It is not true. The shooting of ‘Darna’ has started and trainings have been continuous."

“The news article that came out…that the Darna movie has been shelved is not true. Production is in full swing. Thank you,” Del Rosario stressed.

“Darna” is a fictitious superhero character created in 1950 for Pilipino Komiks by Mars Ravelo and artist Nestor Redondo. Since then, the character has been immortalized in many TV shows and films, starring actresses such as Gina Pareño, Lorna Tolentino, Vilma Santos, Sharon Cuneta, Anjanette Abayari, Nanette Medved, Regine Velasquez, Angel Locsin and Marian Rivera.

Locsin is supposed to star in the latest movie adaptation directed by Erik Matti, but the actress begged off due to a spinal injury. As replacement, Matti chose Soberano, who has been training ever since to prepare for Darna's big comeback.
