Review: âDespicable me 3â doubles the fun with new characters

The minions come back in Illumination Entertainment's "Despicable Me 3." United International Pictures/Released

MANILA, Philippines — A former child star as super-villain and a twin brother revelation are just two of the things to look forward to in the third installment of well-loved animated film “Despicable Me.”

Illumination Entertainment's “Despicable Me 3” doubled the fun in its comeback as it introduced Balthazar Bratt, a formidable super-villain who is a former ‘80s child star and Dru, who happens to be Gru’s twin brother kept by his deceased estranged father.

In their quest to steal the world’s most expensive diamond, returning characters Dru and Lucy found themselves battling with shoulder-padded Bratt who’s armed with Bubble Gum, Rainbow Smoke Rubik's Cube and Sonic Keyta.

Gru will then be challenged by his major identity crisis after getting fired in the Anti-Villain league but will his meeting with long-lost brother Dru help him fix that?

As the film jumped off on a new take for the third installment of the film, it added other elements to make it fresh such as the music and the powers of the villains. Pharell Williams’ music added an engaging factor to the film.

While there are new characters to await, the adorable daughters of Gru—Agnes, Edith and Margo and the Minions will also return in the film.

What’s good about this third film is that each character faces their own struggles making them all relevant in the hour and a half-long comeback. Agnes and her quest for unicorns, Lucy and her yearn to achieve motherhood, and the Minions' relationship with Gru, among others, are the side plots to anticipate.

Although the new characters doubled the fun, “Despicable Me 3” may not be as fun as the first two films but it still stuck to its brand of “despicable” and how it is a thoughtful film perfect for families.

"Despicable Me 3" opened in Philippine cinemas on Wednesday. It is distributed by United International Pictures through Columbia Pictures.
