Sweethearts on-and-offcam

Zaldy Zshornack and Shirley Gorospe first teamed up in Cirio H. Santiago’s romance comedy Sweethearts, directed by no less than future National Artist Gerry de Leon in 1957. From Day 1, it was obvious that Zaldy and Shirley had chemistry, electricity on-and-offcam. Sweethearts, Shirley’s first movie, was shot here in California, where Shirley was based, named Miss Philippines of Los Angeles.

Sweethearts was followed by other Zaldy-Shirley starrers, which showcased her dancing and singing skills. Shirley, My Darling (based on their romance), You’re my Everything, Hongkong Story (an episode of Obra Maestra), Hongkong Honeymooners and Fil-American Girl.

They got married here and settled in Los Angeles with their children. Zaldy continued doing local movies, while Shirley modeled for Filipino designers based in L.A., notably Ruben Panis.

In the ‘90s, the couple came back to the Philippines to retire. When Zaldy died, Shirley opted to return to US, where she died some years back.

Zaldy’s memorable movies include Lo’ Waist Gang, Nueva Vizcaya, Dela Cruz (which gave him a Best Actor award), Batingaw, Hindi Na Sisikat ang Araw and Kaaway ng Batas. — RKC
