MANILA, Philippines – Maxine Medina, the Philippines bet candidate to the 65th Miss Universe pageant, might be the first Filipina candidate to speak in the Filipino language as she plans to have an interpreter on standby for the coronation event.

Medina said that if she makes it to the Top 6 of the prestigious pageant, which includes the question and answer portion, she will still try to speak in English.

“For sure, I will use the English language,” Medina said in a televised interview.

However, the Filipina beauty prefers to be prepared and said there will be a standby interpreter on stage “just in case” she might need one.

Maxine has been criticized for her reportedly "poor" English skills, which makes several netizens worry about the country’s chances of a back-to-back win.

Known personalities such as Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach, Miss Universe 1969 Gloria Diaz and Film Development Council of the Philippines chair Liza Diño support the move to get an interpreter for the country's bet.
