It had to take a movie, Bakit Lahat Ng Gwapo, May Boyfriend?, for me to realize how universal is the message of May Minamahal. A composition by Willy Cruz for the then Kilabot Ng Mga Kolehiyala Hajji Alejandro with lyrics written by Hajji’s own daughter Rachel, May Minamahal is a simple love song that has now acquired a new meaning because of its use in the film.
Produced by Viva Films and directed by Jun Lana, Bakit Lahat Ng Gwapo May Boyfriend is a romantic comedy. But not the usual one. It is about Kylie, played by Anne Curtis, who, because of her relationships history, has acquired the reputation of being a cover girl. Again not the usual one sees on the cover of magazines. It is because she has this penchant for falling for men who later turn out to be gay. So she gets used often as a cover, a sort of prop, for men who are hiding their true sexuality. Ergo she is a cover girl.
Kylie is a wedding planner who works with Benj played by Paolo Ballesteros, who is gay and is one of her exes. They were hired by Diego played by Dennis Trillo to put his wedding together. Now Benj is hopelessly in love with Diego. It is sheer agony for him to be planning his wedding. Soon Kylie has also fallen for the handsome Diego, too. But she is careful now. Before she gets in too deep, she has to find out first if Diego is straight or not.
This guessing game and search for telltale signs is the gist of the movie. I do not know how it will turn out. While we are so used to having the leading man turn out to be straight and gwapo, this is now the millennial era. So there is the possibility that Diego will come out gay in the end and end up with Benj, while Kylie will be left to continue her quest for a straight boyfriend.
It is this drama or I should say comedy that gets played out to the tune of May Minamahal and as this happens, there is the awakening about the lyrics. Its words hold true, whether old or young, short or fat, gay or straight, whatever, everybody is entitled to a Minamahal.
And now the lyrics. Make sure you transpose the gender of the song. Like instead of male to female, make it male to male or female to female. I am sure that like me, you will also find the exercise lots of fun.
Bakit Lahat Ng Gwapo, May Boyfriend? opens nationwide on Oct. 19.
Meanwhile, I wonder how You Are My Song or Ngayon At Kailanman will play out in the transposition game.
