Gloria & Juancho: Wedding of the Year

On Sept. 24, 1960, the most regal of all movie queens, Gloria Romero, and the dashing Juancho Gutierrez, were married at the Santuario de San Antonio in Forbes Park, Makati. It was billed Wedding of the Year, scheduled at 5:30 in the morning to avoid a huge crowd. But that didn’t stop their many fans to troop to the church to witness the event…and to ogle at the stars in attendance.

The entourage included the biggest stars of Sampaguita Pictures, the home studio of the bride and the groom.

Gloria wore an elegant white gown by Ramon Valera, while Juancho was in white suit.

The best man was Gloria’s younger brother, Tito Galla, and the maid of honor was Gloria’s eldest and only sister, Louise. Tito has long ago passed away, while Louise is a nurse based in the US. The youngest brother, Gilbert, a medical doctor, is also based in the US.

The bridesmaids were Daisy Romualdez, Barbara Perez, Susan Roces and Amalia Fuentes.

The wedding was covered by all the major newspapers and magazines and radios, headlined Wedding of the Year.

Gloria remains active to date, especially television. Juancho died years back. They have a daughter, Maritess, noted chef, and a grandson, Chris. —RKC
