Why Probinsyano, Pangako and OTWOL are primetime hits

Coco Martin as policeman Cardo Dalisay in Ang Probinsyano

Nepthalie “Neph” de Borja Jr., who works as a senior security officer, did not watch teleseryes until FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano caught his interest. He is now an avid viewer of the series and makes it a point to watch it every weeknight or catch up on iWantv in case he misses an episode.

“The show is so popular that some people start calling policemen Cardo or Coco Martin,” said Neph in describing the impact of the country’s top-rating series. “It’s good that there’s a positive representation of policemen that viewers see on TV.”

More than just entertaining viewers, Neph believes the series empowers audiences. He said, “People are made aware of criminal activities that can happen to them in real life. It helps them to become more vigilant.”

Since it debuted on primetime TV, FPJ’s Ang Probisnyano has maintained its standing as the country’s most watched TV program with average ratings hitting 43.2 percent in February.

Kantar Media data shows that when Coco transformed as the alluring lady Paloma, the show hit record-breaking national TV ratings of 46.7 percent, the highest so far in 2016.

When asked why the show enjoys a huge following, Coco said, “I think it’s the totality of Ang Probinsyano. We show episodes that are timely and speak of Filipino’s daily struggles.”

The multi-awarded actor also thinks that viewers possibly see his character as a hero, making them follow Cardo’s journey in fighting crimes and saving lives.

“Our country faces a lot of problems and viewers are looking for a hero in different ways. Maybe they found it in Cardo, a policeman,” Coco added.

Aside from FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano, two more phenomenal Kapamilya primetime shows captivated the hearts of Filipino viewers.

The iconic story of Pangako Sa ‘Yo (PSY), which featured Daniel Padilla, Kathryn Bernardo, Jodi Sta. Maria, Angelica Panganiban and Ian Veneracion, fascinated today’s viewers as the lead stars gave a fresh vibe in retelling the stories of their characters. Lessons about love for family also touched viewers’ hearts.

Based on Kantar Media data, the finale hit 44.5 percent in national TV ratings. In a series of mall shows, the whole cast thanked their supporters. A total of 52,000 fans showed up at SM Pampanga, Market! Market!, SM San Lazaro and Alabang Town Center.

“The team behind our show did a good job in balancing the old and the new PSY. I’d also like to thank the fans for seeing the show as a remake that was just given new life,” said Daniel Padilla.

Adding to the list of ABS-CBN’s phenomenal teleseryes is On the Wings of Love (OTWOL) that became a certified worldwide phenomenon and brought romantic comedy to a whole new level. The show’s main characters, Clark and Leah, also became instant household names and part of daily conversations.

OTWOListas tuned in to Clark and Leah’s most awaited wedding that marked the show’s all-time high national TV ratings of 27.8 percent, according to data of Kantar Media. The online world also showed their love and support for the pair’s union as the teleserye’s official hashtag #OTWOLTheLastFlight almost reached the four million mark.

On its most anticipated finale last Feb. 26, thousands of certified OTWOListas went in full force and jam-packed OTWOL’s finale live viewing party held at the Ynares Center in Antipolo City.

The live wedding celebration made fans rejoice and filled the venue with overflowing kilig. The crowd got even wilder when lead stars and real-life couple James Reid and Nadine Lustre locked lips in front of everyone, drawing deafening screams from their loyal supporters.

Towards the end of the show, James and Nadine sent out their words of gratitude for the overwhelming support they have been receiving since the start of the primetime soap.

The three Kapamilya primetime series, FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano, Pangako Sa’Yo and On the Wings of Love are certified phenomenal hits because of high production values, relatable characters and heartfelt stories that entertain, inspire and empower audiences.
