Pianist Nangit’s tribute to Philippines composers
MANILA, Philippines – Solo classical pianist Nick Nangit opens the 2016 concert series of Paco Park Presents tonight at 6 with Piano Resolutions, a merry mix of rarely played Filipino compositions and international piano pieces, namely…
•Bella Filipina, a collaboration between Francisco Buencamino Sr. and Spanish composer Ignace Masaguer, which is a tribute to the late broadcasting icon, Tiya Dely Magpayo who used the danza as the theme music of her longest-running radio program. This was supposedly a nationalistic song about the Philippines which Buencamino made romantic about the Filipina beauty.
•Damdamin, a romantic but rarely played masterpiece by Buencamino.
•Mindanao Orchid, an avant garde difficult work by Ramon Tapales echoing the native instruments of Mindanao
•Pinilakang Tabing, a commissioned arrangement for solo classical piano of most popular love songs from Filipino movies of the ’50s and ’60s, like Dahil Sa ’Yo, Hindi Kita Malimot, Maalaala Mo Kaya and Saan Ka Man Naroroon. A collaborative work between Agot Espino and Imma Real.
•Sana Ay Ikaw Na Nga, the world premiere of a special classically arranged hit OPM song reminiscent of the ’80s, with the blessings of the composer herself, Cecile Azarcon-Inocentes who collaborated with Real.
•Payaso, a commissioned medley of hit songs of the late novelty songwriter Yoyoy Villame classically arranged for solo piano: Mag-Exercise Tayo, Magellan, Buchikik and Mahiwagang Combo. A collaboration between Espino and Real.
International classical piano pieces include Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring by Bach; Intermezzo, Opus 118 No. 2 by Brahms; Moonlight Sonata by Beethoven; Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 by Lizst (used in the animation Tom and Jerry); Gnossiene No. 1 by Satie; and Heroic Polonaise by Chopin.
