Lea Salonga Broadway musical 'Allegiance' to close next month
NEW YORK — "Allegiance," a challenging musical that set several love stories against the setting of an internment camp and an atomic bomb blast, will close on Broadway on Valentine's Day.
Producers said Wednesday that the show starring Lea Salonga, Telly Leung and George Takei will have played 37 previews and 113 regular performances since in made its bow at the Longacre Theatre on Oct. 6.
The production was inspired by the childhood of "Star Trek" icon Takei, who had family members among the 120,000 Japanese-Americans incarcerated during World War II.
The show has struggled at the box office and last week, when Broadway was a huge draw, took in only $552,338 from a potential box office haul of $927,600.
Salonga also took to Twitter to announce the closing of the Broadway show.
It's official: ALLEGIANCE will be closing on Feb 14. Six more weeks to catch our beautiful, relevant, and emotional show!!! #Gaman
