Pia Wurtzbach delivers on promised win 7 months after Pacman loss

Filipino fans rejoiced as Pia Wurtzbach is proclaimed the new Miss Universe, even after a hosting gaffe that erroneously declared Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutierrez as the winner of the pageant.

The victory may come as a surprise. But the 26-year-old Pia actually promised this moment for Filipinos seven months ago, after the defeat of boxer Manny Pacquiao in the hands of Floyd Mayweather Jr.

In a tweet on May 3, minutes after Pacquiao lost to Mayweather, she posted: "Kalma lang guys. Ako bahala. Babawi tayo sa Miss Universe!" The statement became viral and made headlines.

The tweet is still live until now, proving that Pia, a constant subject of bashing since winning the Miss Universe Philippines crown in March, is not ashamed of her very confident proclamation.

Reactions toward the tweet were mixed. Some supported Pia, others warned her not to be too confident.

In fact, in the comments section of Philstar.com's article on the tweet, a reader said: "Pia, hindi pang-international beauty queen ang dating mo. Dapat [Supranational] ka na lang or Tourism. Pustahan tayo hindi ka mag-peplace kahit top 15. Dapat si Janicel [Janicel Lubina, the reigning Bb. Pilipinas International] ang nanalong Universe. Ang layo ng dating n'ya sa'yo. Ang dami pang mas maganda kesa sa'yo. 'Wag ka nang humirit pa. You will just regret what you say."

She made a reference to this in her interview with Philstar.com before she flew to the United States for the pageant.

"Because I’ve had some booboos. Ako 'yung nagkakamali. Minsan, sumusobra na rin naman sila. But I’ve learned and I’m handling things better now," Pia said when asked how she handles criticism online.

Those haters are probably eating their words now, as Pia has delivered on her promise.
