U.S.-based Filipino nun in an NYC piano concert

MANILA, Philippines – Sister Cecilia Hervas (photo), a US-based Filipina nun and piano virtuoso, will be presented by the Assumption Alumnae Association Abroad (AAAA) in a charity concert at the Kalayaan Hall of the Philippine Center on Fifth Ave. in Manhattan on Nov. 13.

A Religious of the Assumption currently missioned in Lansdale, Pennsylvania, the classically-trained Sister Cecilia has performed in various parts of the US, as well as at the Assumption convents in Manila, Paris and Denmark.

Her latest show, Reflections in Advent, is aimed at raising funds for AAAA’s various humanitarian projects, according to Dr. Ching Legarda, one of the event organizers.

Sr. Cecilia was born in Iloilo City. She took undergraduate studies in music at St. Scholastica’s College in Manila and pursued a Master of Music degree at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, N.Y., where she received the prestigious Performer’s Certificate.

“When I play before people,” she says, “I am aware I am touching the human thirst for beauty. Music has power to move the heart where words sometimes fail.”

Her past involvements in the field of education included campus ministry, immersion programs and spiritual direction.
