Cardinal Tagle’s song added attraction to Pope Francis movie

Top: Cardinal Antonio Tagle with Pope Francis during the Pope’s visit to the Philippines last January. Inset: Cardinal Tagle with Fr. Raul Caga from whose inspirational album Gracious Mercy their duet was lifted. Left: Pope Francis (in a standee at the St. Joseph Adoration Chapel in Quezon City) has a magnetic effect on kids, one of them Don Sevilla, two-and-a-half years old.

The music video of a duet between Cardinal Luis Antonio “Chito” Tagle and Fr. Raul S. Caga, SVD, is featured as an added attraction to the movie Papa Francisco: The Pope Francis Story, released by Pioneer Films nationwide starting yesterday.

Here’s the song which is among the 12 selections in Fr. Raul’s inspirational album Gracious Mercy released last month by Curve Records:

Mercy & Compassion

Fr. Caga:

Created in Your Image

Perfected in beauty

Crowning Glory of Creation I Am

And yet fallen into sin from the distant past

And saved when His cross came to pass

With Your Son

Mercy and Compassion Shown

With His Death

Mercy and Compassion flowed

May my heart express His Mercy

May my life radiate Compassion

Jesus showed us what true love can be

Cardinal Tagle:

I have known you from eternity

Have loved you true and perfectly

Your name is in the palm of My Hand,

and yet you have turned away

Insisted on your own

Still Mercy and Compassion I give you

With My Son

Mercy and Compassion Shown

With His Death

Mercy and Compassion flowed

May your heart express His Mercy

May your life radiate Compassion

My Only Son showed

what true Love can be

Bridge:

Fr. Caga:

Allow me be a reflection

Gracious Mercy and Compassion

Cardinal Tagle:

Be a servant of My people

For the least is the greatest in My Kingdom

Refrain (duet)

With My/Your Son,

Mercy and Compassion shown

With His death,

Mercy and Compassion flowed

Cardinal Tagle: May your heart express His Mercy

Fr. Caga: May my life radiate Compassion

Duet: Jesus showed what true love can be

Over a recent lunch, Pioneer producer Wilson Yuloque learned from his friend Rudy Tee, Curve big boss, that his company has a beautiful song sung by Fr. Raul and Cardinal Tagle. Wilson liked the song so much that he felt it should be heard by as many people as possible, so he decided to add the song’s music video as “bonus” to moviegoers.

The film on the life of the current Supreme Pontiff and Successor of St. Peter  told from the point of view of a young Spanish journalist named Ana is based on a book Pope Francis: Life and Revolution by world-renowned journalist and Vatican correspondent Elisabetta Pique.

The film stars Dario Grandinetti, who won an International Emmy Award for Best Actor in 2012, as Pope Francis, and Silvia Abascal, Malaga Spanish Film Festival 2006 Best Actress, as Ana. It is directed by award-winning director-writer Beda Docampo Feijoo.

After his historic visit to Sri Lanka and the Philippines last January, Pope Francis went to other countries, the latest being Cuba and the US. The faithful love Pope Francis for his down-to-earth style and infectious warmth, and soft spot, especially for the poor and children.

According to the production notes, Pique’s book has been hailed in Argentina as the most complete and up-to-date portrait of the Pope. The movie chronicles the life of Pope Francis from when he was in Buenos Aires when as a teenager he quietly discovered his religious calling, not knowing that he was taking the first step that would lead him to the Vatican.

“This is an opportunity for us to know him, his struggles, his triumphs, his joys,” said Eugenio “Toto” Villareal, head of MTRCB (Movie and Television Review and Classification Board), endorsing the movie.

During a special screening held at the SM Megamall Cinema 3 last Sept. 17, Villareal urged everyone to intensify their affection for the Pope. “I have been taught that we should love the Pope with that real love of a son or daughter for a father. Use this occasion to formulate a resolution or two in regard to our love for the Pope,” he said.
