One movie, two titles

In 1949, a Fernando Poe starrer had two titles: Sagur and Ika-Labintatlong Sultan, produced by Movietec and directed by Mar I. Esmeralda.

But why?

The speculation (no one really knew) was the movie (‘a glorious saga of the south’) originally billed Ika-Labintatlong Sultan, but was eventually changed to Sagur, because the 13th meant bad luck. Or so superstitious beliefs claimed.

The movie had an English version which surprisingly, carried the 13th word, The 13th Sultan.

Earlier, in 1948, Rogelio de la Rosa starred in Ang Vengador which also had an English version, titled Sword of the Avenger. While Rogelio played the title role in both versions, the supporting stars were different.

Ang Vengador had Pacita Francisco for leading lady, with an all-Filipino cast. Sword of the Avenger co-starred Sigrid Gurie (leading lady) and other American actors. — RKC
