MANILA, Philippines - Saucony pro-athlete Tim Reed made history as the first Champion of Century Tuna’s Ironman 70.3 last month. The Australian triathlete crossed the finish line at 3:51:59, beating out fellow pros Mitch Robins, Josh Amberger and Luke McKenzie to win at the inaugural Ironman in Subic Bay.
“I haven’t raced here yet and it’s something I’ve always wanted to do,” says Reed, adding that he now understands why international pros rave about the Philippines. “The course was great. The swim was really beautiful, the ride was windy and hard, the roads were clear and there was no traffic, but it was just really tough riding.”
It was at the run leg that Reed caught up with fellow Aussie Amberger, who led the pack for most of the triathlon. The inaugural Century Tuna Ironman 70.3 made waves for hosting the most number of professional participants in a Philippine triathlon race with world-class athletes flying in from all over the world to race in Subic Bay.
In spite of the talent pool of the competition, Reed remained optimistic on race day. The Saucony pro athlete said, “I felt really good today and I’ve got the best shoe sponsor out there, so the run was easy.”
As the official footwear and apparel sponsor of Century Tuna Ironman 70.3, Saucony pursues its mission of inspiring athletes by engaging closely with the community and providing the best performance footwear and apparel. For the race, Reed used his Saucony Type A6, a light and responsive racing shoe that’s a runner’s favorite.
