Luis F. Nolasco: Discoverer of stars

Luis F. Nolasco was a noted director, producer, scriptwriter, poet, magazine editor in the ’30s up to the ’70s.

Among the films he produced, wrote and directed were Ginoong Patay-Gutom, Kamagong, Amoritis, Siete Dolores and Ang Lumang Simbahan — all under the Nolasco Bros. Pictures banner. Nolasco wrote the screenplays of such big hits as Nasaan Ka Irog?, Bituing Marikit, Pakiusap and Milagro ng Nazareno sa Quiapo.

Nolasco won the Premio Zobel in 1979 for his writings in Spanish in such publications as El Debate, La Opinion and Academia Filipino.

But the multi-talented Nolasco was also a discoverer of stars, among them Rosa Rosal, Leila Morena, Lilia Dizon, Eddie del Mar, Pilar Padilla and Vida Florante.

Rosa and Lilia eventually signed up with LVN; Leila and Eddie joined Premiere; Pilar and Vida freelanced. — RKC
