MANILA, Philippines - Mary Jean Lastimosa said she is “filled with love” despite her failed attempt to win the Miss Universe crown.
The 27-year-old beauty queen failed to reach the finals of the 63rd Miss Universe, held in Miami, Florida on Sunday (Monday morning, Manila time). The title went to Paulina Vega of Colombia.
In an Instagram post a few hours after the pageant, Mary Jean said: “So proud to be a filipino! Man, cant express how grateful i am to everyone! Im filled with love right now! Love you all! Godbless us! Mabuhay!”
In a statement to sent to Philstar.com and other media outfits, the Binibining Pilipinas Charities, Inc. commended Mary Jean’s performance in the pageant.
“The Binibining Pilipinas Charities, Incorporated would like to congratulate Ms. Mary Jean Lastimosa for her performance in the 63rd Miss Universe Pageant held in Doral, Miami USA,” the statement said.
It added: “Title or no title, her participation in the pageant’s global discussions on peace, cultural exchange and other charity initiatives has beautifully showcased the Filipina’s beauty, intellect and compassion.”
The statements came amid local netizens’ cry of disappointment over the results, with some saying the pageant wanted to have a Latina winner. The pageant’s venue is perceived to be a Latin American territory.
A number of local celebrities also expressed shock over the results, including Ruffa Gutierrez and Vice Ganda.
