Netizens took to social media to criticize MJ’s national costume -- a white terno with yellow and pink floral accents.
Some described the outfit as lackluster. Others, meanwhile, mocked the costume, saying it “remotely looks Pinoy” and that it “reminds me of a flower basket.” A few even compared it to a wedding cake.
But the Miss Universe national costume segment of the pageant’s prelims is known for being over the top as it churns out elaborate and outrageous costumes every year.
This year, for instance, Miss USA Nia Sanchez came out as the American flag and Grace Levy of Great Britian wore a feminine version of the Queen’s Guard uniform.
Meanwhile, Miss Canada Chanel Beckenlehner dressed us an ice hockey player -- with a scoreboard, hockey sticks and a hairdo that resembles an ice hockey trophy.
There are a few simple costumes in between the elaborate displays of the Miss Universe beauty queens: Miss Lebanon Saly Greige, for example, wore a traditional Lebanese sherwal.
