Secret identities in movies

Joy Jonette Chuyaco - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Are they Mr. X or are they Mr. Y? It is quite confusing because these movie characters have more than one identity. Some of them assume alter-egos for work, while others do it for tricking people. And there are also some who do it for personal reasons. Films like these always seem to be interesting. It adds spice to an ordinary character. Here is a list of movies featuring characters with double or even multiple identities:

Identity Theft. Dawn (Diana) Budgie is an expert when it comes to taking people’s identities. This is what she does for a living and it has provided her with all the things she needs. However, one of her victims is about to change her life. Well, it’s never too late to make a change.

MIB. K and J have a unique and cool job: That is to protect the Earth from aliens that mean harm. One thing they have to give up though is their previous lives. All they can do is to, maybe look at their loved ones from afar and that’s it. What a price to pay in exchange of a prestigious job!

Catch Me If You Can. The film is based on the life of Frank Abagnale, who before hitting his 20s has already committed massive check frauds using different identities. Frank sure is a talented man — sadly, he uses his talent in a wrong way.

Superman. Probably the most famous one on this list, Clark Kent is a down-to-earth and sweet gentleman in the eyes of his fellow workers. What everybody doesn’t know is that he is actually the ever-dependable Superman. Well, sometimes the ordinary looking ones are actually the ones who are extraordinary.

Ms. Congeniality. FBI special agent Gracie Hart has a strong personality that intimidates most of her work mates. She is far from being feminine in the way she acts and speaks. When a bomb threat at a beauty pageant is reported, there’s no other best candidate for the job but Gracie. Why? Because the bureau needs someone who can pose as a contestant — she is the perfect fit! Can she do this one?

Mrs. Doubtfire. Daniel Hillard has just got a divorce and his wife is taking the children. Because he loves his children so much, he thinks of a crazy but creative idea to pose as an old lady nanny for the kids. He becomes a completely different person outside, making people believe that he is indeed someone else. His disguise even gets him a TV show. Now, what happens when the truth is revealed?

Mulan. Released as an animated film in 1998, Mulan is a story set in China about a brave young lady who disguises as a man to join the army in behalf of her father. To her mates, she is a young man going to battle, but in reality she is a young woman trying to be the good daughter.

Batman. Bruce Wayne, the multi-millionaire and ever-eligible bachelor of Gotham City, has a dark secret. No, he’s not a bad guy; he is, in fact, the hero of the city: He is Batman. His dual identities share something in common — that is, whether he is Bruce Wayne or Batman, he is both famous anyway. There’s nothing to lose or is there?

Coming to America. Showed in way back 1988, the film is about a prince who wishes to live a life away from the palace and find true love. He goes to America with his best friend as regular citizens and they both start their American adventure. Nobody realizes that he is actually royalty. Until when will he be able to hide his real identity?

Maid in Manhattan. Marisa Ventura works for an upscale hotel in Manhattan. One day, persuaded by a friend, she tries on one of the dresses of a socialite guest. Just by chance, a gentleman who is a candidate for senator sees her and instantly falls in love with her. Things get more and more complicated as Marisa continuously takes the identity of a socialite. Is this ever a good idea?
