Memorable opening scenes in movies

Joy Jonette Chuyaco - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Have you ever watched a movie where the opening scene instantly got your attention? This seems to be a very effective technique in engaging the audience right from the start of the film. It sets the stage for more excitement to come from the rest of the film. Here are some movies with unforgettable introductory scenes:

Jaws. A young lady goes for a swim in the beach and in no time is dragged down by something under the water. And that is just the beginning of the classic movie about a killer shark, promising viewers that more is yet to come. Not only did the movie become a hit, but it also became a fixture in the video collection of many people.

Scream. Opening scene: A girl receives a phone call from a stranger. What seems to be a harmless conversation suddenly turns into a bloody one — already, at the beginning of the movie? Yes, giving viewers a memorable entrée to a movie that will keep them at the edge of their seats.

Citizen Kane. Considered as one of the best films ever, Citizen Kane is about the mysterious message of a dying man before his death, and this is already related right at the start of the film — a smart way of getting the viewers’ attention.

The Dark Knight. This is the Batman movie that truly shows The Joker’s dark side. Fans are used to seeing Joker as a skillful, witty villain. However, The Dark Knight takes Joker seriously. The opening scene alone proves this true. The film is one of the best Batman movies ever.

Raiders of the Lost Ark. The opening scene of the movie, wherein archeologist Indiana Jones is in an ancient temple running about from one booby trap to another, already gives the viewers an impression that they are in for a journey full of adventure, action and fun. Indeed, the film was well-received and became a hit, and so did its sequels.

Sound of Music. Who could ever forget the beautiful scenery featured in this classic film? The movie opens with Maria (Julie Andrews) running through the hills and singing her heart out to the sound of music. There is no question as to why the film is an all-time favorite of many.

Final Destination. The movie and its sequels have their way of catching viewers’ undivided attention right from the beginning. First, the movies present ordinary day-to-day activities, then comes the accident and finally, the tragic death of one person to another. But wait! That is just the beginning.

Kill Bill Volume 1. The first scene of the movie (a helpless bride is badly wounded, lying on the ground and then shot) is already a clear giveaway that there will be loads of action coming up. And indeed, the film is all action from start till the end. What a way to prepare viewers.

Apocalypse Now. First, viewers are led to a scene showing beautiful greenery in the jungle, then suddenly, a huge explosion! Apocalypse Now is definitely an action-packed war movie. The film is considered one of the best war films of all time.

Goodfellas. If you’re a fan of gangster movies, then Goodfellas is the film for you. The opening line of one of the lead characters goes, “As far as I can remember, I always wanted to be a gangster.” So be it.
