Paruparo: More than a movie magazine

Paruparo, popular magazine of the ’40s and early ’50s, invariably featured movie actresses on its cover, with accompanying write-ups. But it was actually more than a movie magazine.

Paruparo (take note of the butterfly on the logo) was also a literary and fashion weekly. Plus several pages devoted to comics stories.

Writing short stories — ‘isang buong nobela,’ ‘nobelang tapos’ — for Paruparo were popular authors like Mars Ravelo, Gonzalo Flores, Nemesio Caravana, Tony Velasquez, Clodualdo del Mundo, Sotera Rosales Abella, Andrea Amor Tablan and Rufino Alejandro.

But of course, articles about the latest in fashion were also featured, worn by movie stars, which were the come-on of Paruparo.

Paruparo sold for 30 sentimos a copy — a ‘princely sum’ at that time. — RKC
