Tribal Gear’s hardcore act at Dutdutan 14

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - (hed) P.E. (photo), the American rapcore band from Huntington, California, is headlining Dutdutan 14’s slew of musical greats to perform tonight and tomorrow, Sept. 27 at the World Trade Center.

(hed) P.E., a.k.a. (Higher Education) Planet Earth, performs a style of music which it refers to as G-punk, a fusion of punk rock and Gangsta rap.

Formed in 1994, (hed) P.E. was the brainchild of front man Jahred (a.k.a. M.C.U.D. or Jerred Shaine), with a goal of fusing punk rock heritage with G-punk-inflected hip-hop into a sub-genre he referred to as G-punk. Other band members include Mawk (Mark Young) on bass; Jaxon (Jackson Lee Benge) on guitars; and Trauma (Jeremiah Stratton) on drums. Influenced by the likes of the Beastie Boys, Black Sabbath, Bob Marley, Led Zeppelin, Nine Inch Nails, Notorious B.I.G. and Rage Against the Machine, it’s easy to see how the array of sounds and styles could inspire a solid, eclectic sounding band.

It wasn’t until its 2000 release Broke that finally brought the band into the mainstream spotlight. It was the album that solidified the group as a contender in the rock and metal community with what had developed into its notorious brew of metal, rasta and punk.

Ten years since its formation, the band amassed a treasure trove of music including an EP and nine studio albums; the most recent of which, Evolution, has been turning the metal world inside-out. Tracks are just heavy, groovy and brutal. Perfect for a band that refuses to play it safe, Evolution is already being considered (hed) P.E.’s greatest album yet having already received rave reviews in the short time it has been released.

(hed) P.E. is guaranteed to bring its high-energy, bone-crushing instrumentals and uniquely heavy vocals at this year’s Dutdutan. The show, however, will not be for the faint of heart.
