The Remaining director talks about his Bible-based horror film

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines -  In just a few days, the end- times thriller The Remaining will open in theaters nationwide. It’s gaining momentum in social net- works and leader- ship screenings.

Below is the interview with director Casey La Scala.

Who is the audience for this film?

“This film was made for a faith-based audience. The story is a very real interpretation of what is presented in Revelations. I hope that it will appeal to a main- stream audience as well, because I think all the themes presented are universal.”

What attract- ed you to this story?

“After my father died, I really started to question life and death. Also, I was confirmed when I was younger and remember the stories of the rapture and the tribulation. I think I was attracted to this story because

it hit home for me. Look around, we need to take inventory in our lives in terms of our faith. The Middle East, Ebola, natural disasters, etc., it’s all around us. We could be in the end of times right now.”

How did you decide which end-times events to include?

“The six trumpets and the woes that follow presented a perfect trajectory of obstacles for the characters in the story.”

What does the film say about who God is and what He’s like?

“The film says that God is there for you, and all you need to do is ask Him to be a part of your life. If you do, you will be spared the horrors of what’s to come. As the characters in the film make the decision to walk with God, they all are comforted.”

Tell us a little about the look and feel of the film.

“I initially started out with conceptualizing the script like a found footage movie. Then I began writing and decided I wanted to create a more interesting look for the visual style and started thinking about an omniscient camera.

“Within the framework of this film, we wanted to be able to catch the visceral reactions of a character shooting a home movie. So I decided to do a hybrid of both to capture

it all. When the audience sees the movie they will feel like they are there.”

What was your goal with this story?

“My goal making the film was to get people talking. Specifically, taking inventory on where they are in their relationship with God and those they love.”

The Remaining opens in theaters on Sept. 24. For details, visit http://www. somypictures.com/ movies.theremain- ing.
