Vince Velasco open to any possibility
MANILA, Philippines - “I’m open to any possibility. But this (showbiz) is my No. 1 choice.â€
That’s Vince Velasco speaking of the career path the Kapuso heartthrob wants to tread. Vince is enthusiastic to understand better the nitty-gritty of TV acting after his stint in the GMA 7 groundbreaking primetime soap My Husband’s Lover (MHL). He played the other half of another gay couple in the series.
“I want to keep learning,†says Vince. “Malaki ang natutunan ko sa My Husband’s Lover. After that, I got hooked (in acting) already.â€
But before showbiz beckoned, Vince had graced fashion shows and TV commercials (SkyBroadband and Compañero). These humble beginnings paved the way for him to enter mainstream entertainment.
“It was very natural,†describes Vince of his transition from being a model to an aspiring actor. “I enjoy being with the people I work with. Even if I lack time to sleep, I enjoy their company. I like the idea of being taught — like this is how you act (in this scene) or you approach your role (this manner).â€
Given his boy-next-door looks and affable personality, Vince can be cast in feel-good, romantic-comedy projects. A dime a dozen of Kapuso young actresses will fit the bill of Vince’s love team mate. If there’s one genre Vince likes to see himself doing, it will be action.
“I always wanted to do action,†he says. “(Why action?) There’s always something that happens. You’re not just sitting down because something is about to happen.â€
The “daredevil†in Vince looks forward to do chasing scenes and adrenaline-high stunts that remind one of Jason Statham’s Transporter and Matt Damon-Jeremy Renner’s The Bourne series. Vince’s background in swimming and basketball will come handy when the time comes. Meantime, he will be busy doing the movie Cain, with Alden Richards and Aljur Abrenica.
Asked about his family and friends’ reaction when he finally decided to make a career out of showbiz, Vince said, “My friends respect my decision. They support me. And I like friends who tell their concerns. I respect everyone’s opinion. I know myself. For me, being part of MHL) was a big opportunity. It was a big hit. My reservation wasn’t for me. It was more for my family. My grandparents are church people. I called them up and they said, ‘If it makes you happy, then go for it.’ I told them if they have a problem with me, they can approach and talk to me.â€
My Husband’s Lover had reignited Vince’s interest in acting.
“When I was younger, I wanted to act,†he recalls. “My mom was a commercial model for a while and she would bring me to her shoots… Then, I got the opportunity to work (on the set of) My Husband’s Lover. I enjoyed the experience and I decided to continue (acting). I took a break for a while to finish my studies. Education is important to me.†Vince is an Interdisciplinary Studies graduate from Ateneo de Manila University.
Although his first project was not the “usual†way to jumpstart a career on TV, Vince is happy about the public’s warm reception and positive feedback.
“It was a big compliment because it means I was doing a good job,†he says. “It’s about the people who are watching me. If they really enjoy what I do, it means I’m doing something right.â€
Vince says he is not afraid of doing an off-beat, daring project for as long as he is given the right role and the right director.
“I’m very professional,†he says. “I’m just happy to be part of the industry.â€
Thus, showbiz is it for Vince.
