Another view on life, love in 'The Fault in Our Stars’

MANILA, Philippines- A story about two cancer patients—yet it was not about cancer.

This is how “The Fault in Our Stars” lead star Shailene Woodley described the film, which is based on John Green’s novel.

“The Fault In Our Stars is a love story about two kids with cancer, but it’s not about cancer,” she said describing the film. “I was so deeply moved by Hazel and Gus, who are able to see things that a lot of us are too busy living our lives to see.”

Woodley plays the character of Hazel, a teenager with cancer whi has stopped seeing the beauty of life until she meets Gus, played by Ansel Elgort, in a cancer support group.

The cast and even producers of the film had to meet and interact personally with teenagers, doctors, and patients' families to fully understand how they could give justice to the film.

Elgort admitted that there were times when it was hard for him to pull off his character and needed some assistance from his co-star Woodley.

“I’ve had some moments in this film that have been harder for me than any in my career, so having Shailene by my side made it a lot easier,” he said.

But despite the challenges, Elgort admires the fact that “the book is full of beautiful ideas that make you think about life and love.”

As for Woodley, being part of this project is “an honor, to have brought to the big screen one of the most powerful fictional characters I’ve ever met. The Fault in Our Stars rewrote the way I look at each breath.”

“The Fault in Our Stars” is directed by Josh Boone and will be in Philippine cinemas June 5.
