MVP: TV5 trying to find its place amid stiff competition
May 12, 2014 | 5:53pm
MANILA, Philippines – “We're simply trying our best to find our place in the sun na muna.â€
Thus said TV5 chairman Manny V. Pangilinan about the Kapatid network's position in the industry amid competition with ABS-CBN and GMA-7 at the sidelines of Ad Summit Pilipinas 2014 recently.
In an interview with members of the press, MVP said TV5 will have “more and better shows this year,†particularly comedy shows and original TV movies.
The Kapatid network has been producing daily comedy shows for its primetime block, a time usually reserved for heavy drama soap operas. The network has also been producing one-off original TV movies—a move that TV5 chief operating officer for entertainment Wilma Galvante described as “vertical programming.â€
TV5 sponsored a dinner party during the Ad Summit Pilipinas 2014, which was graced by MVP and some of the network's stars—including Derek Ramsay, Ogie Alcasid, Wendell Ramos, and Jasmine Curtis-Smith, among others.
Pangilinan's speech during the dinner party emphasized the convergence of four multi-screen platforms: television, computers, mobile phones and cinema.
“Where trends point to declining TV viewing, one would assume content consumption is decreasing. The truth is that it's actually increasing—but on digital and multi-screen,†he said.
The TV5 chairman also quipped about TV5 still being “number three.â€
“The last time I spoke to the advertising community was a little over two years ago, in 2011. I said then that while ABS-CBN and GMA were quarreling over who's number one, TV5 was clearly the undisputed number three in the industry,†MVP said. “Today, I can confirm that we are still number three.â€
