Yeng on marriage: 'If you're really sure, why wait?'

Chuck Smith - The Philippine Star
MANILA, Philippines - “That's normal, kasi nagulat din naman ako,” Yeng Constantino said when asked about her fans who were surprised with her engagement with boyfriend Yan Asuncion recently.

It can be remembered that Yeng announced she's engaged to Asuncion last month. This surprised many of her followers as the two have been in a relationship for only less than a year prior to Asuncion's proposal.

The 25-year-old singer, however, said at the sidelines of Nuvali's outdoor concert with Barbie Almalbis and Jay R at The Fields, Nuvali in Sta. Rosa Laguna on Saturday, April 26 that she does not see the need to wait any longer since she and Asuncio are already sure they want to get married.

The concert ended Nuvali's Summerscape celebration, which coincided with the opening of their newest lifestyle activity center called Camp N.

“Ang sa akin, if you're really sure, why wait? You're gonna spend the rest of your life together. Why not start now?” Yeng told members of the press, including Philstar.com.

The “Hawak Kamay” singer also said, “Sigurado na talaga kami. Hindi ako takot matali kasi mahal ko siya.”

She added they have a “conviction” when it comes to pre-marital sex. “Both kami, our stand in pre-marital sex is we won't do it. We want to honor God, we want to honor our parents,” Yeng explained.

“There are boundaries and syempre, ikaw, we enjoy our time together pero alam mo rin na kung patatagalin mo yan baka mas lalo pang madisgrasya,” she added.

No need to change

Yeng said she and Asuncion are planning to get married first quarter of 2015.

“Kapag sobrang long engagement, sobrang hirap din nun, e. Parang syempre, you don't want to compromise and do stupid stuff. Kailangang i-set yung goal, ito yung goal natin,” she explained.

“I think tama lang din (yung date) kasi kung this year namin, ang dami ko ring inaasikaso. Next year would be nice kasi kung mag-honeymoon, meron talaga kaming time together.”

Yeng added they're planning to have a baby two to three years after getting married.

Would the artist known for her wholesome and cutesy songs such “Chinito” and “Jeepney Love Story” change her music when she has finally tied the knot?  Yeng said she does not want to force maturity in her art simply because of her engagement and upcoming wedding.

“If I'm just gonna do that because I think I need to, I'm faking myself. Kung nag-eevolve yung music ko, nagbabago ako ng porma, nagbabago ako ng kulay ng buhok, it's evolution. It's not something that you do forcefully. It's something that you do when time comes,” she said.

The singer is already working on her sixth studio album.

“He (boyfriend Yan Asuncion) is very supportive. Ito yung sinabi niya, 'Ayokong alisin ka doon sa platform na binigay sa iyo ni God just because gusto ko dito ka lang'.”

She further said, “He wants me to shine in my own platform. He may be inside but he's doing his thing because that's his passion. His passion is to worship, his passion is to really serve God. And in the same way, I love performing.”
