Hollywood star to visit Ormoc

FUNFARE - Ricky Lo - The Philippine Star

After world celebrities Justin Bieber, David Beckham (UNICEF ambassador) and apl.de.ap. (Allan Pineda) who personally visited Yolanda victims in Tacloban, next on line is Hollywood actor Gabriel Macht who’s arriving today to visit the same typhoon victims in Ormoc City.

His visit is made possible by Globe Telecom, the country’s leading telecommunications company, in fulfilling its commitment of building a wonderful and resilient Philippines through its Project Wonderful nation-building efforts by helping typhoon survivors of that city.

In partnership with the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), Globe has been granting business to beneficiaries identified by DSWD as part of its Sustainable Livelihood Program (SLP), a community-based capacity-building program that seeks to improve the socio-economic status of program participants.

“We are committed to contribute to nation-building by providing relevant entrepreneurship and livelihood opportunities among Typhoon Yolanda survivors in Ormoc City so they can rise again and move forward,” said Globe president and CEO Ernest Cu. “We hope that through this project, we will be able to teach them to manage sustainable micro-enterprises that will help them move from survival to self-efficiency,” he added.

Macht stars as legendary law partner Harvey Specter in USA’s most provocative drama, Suits. He was also in Love & Other Drugs with Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway (who were both nominated for Golden Globes for their performances); in The Spirit with Samuel Jackson, Scarlett Johansson and Eva Mendes; and in The Good Shepherd with Robert De Niro, Matt Damon and Angelina Jolie.

BIR head Kim shows ‘soft side’ in radio show

She is known as the toughest head of the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) who minced no words in running after tax evaders even to the point of putting them to shame for allegedly cheating the government for not paying the correct amount of taxes.

But the soft heart and lighter side of BIR Commissioner Kim Henares was passionately opened when she read three love and prayer-poems in election lawyer Romy Macalintal’s radio program, The Law of the Heart is Love. And while she always demonstrates a very strong personality, she revealed that she is one woman who cries too easily.

â€œI don’t know why they call me ‘tough,’ the fact is that I am just implementing the law. Mababa nga ang luha ko kasi madali akong umiyak. Sa aking pagbabasa o panonood ng TV, madali akong paiyakin kaya nga natatawa sa akin ang aking asawa,” revealed Henares during the interview portion in Romy’s program.

On the lighter side of the show, Henares told Romy that her favorite songs are All I Ask of You from The Phantom of the Opera and any version of Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You.

Find more about Henares’ personal and official revelations and her poem-reading episode in The Law of the Heart is Love at 8 tonight on DWBR 104.3 FM (with a replay Sunday, 7 to 8 p.m.). Romy’s program recently won the 2013 Catholic Mass Media Awards for Best Radio Entertainment Program. The entire proceeds of advertisements from its various sponsors directly go to the scholarship program of Mission Guided by Mary Foundation which now supports 600 poor and deserving elementary and high school students of various Catholic parishes.

Megan circling the world

There’s always something new about 2013 Miss World Megan Young who hasn’t stopped circling the world as part of her “Beauty with a Purpose” year-long duty.

After she and 2013 Miss Universe Gabriela Isler sat as judges of the 2014 Miss Russia contest and assisted reigning queen Elmira Abdrazakova in crowning the winner, Julia Alipova of Balakovo, who will represent Russia in both the Miss World and Miss Universe pageants.

Megan then flew back to London but after two days left again for Paris for live radio/TV interviews. She took advantage of her free time by seeing the sights with 2012 Miss World Wenxia Yu who was in Paris for the Fashion Week.

“I had my first taste of authentic French macaroon and I will see to it that Marine Lorphelin, my first runner-up, will be in town the next time I am in France,” Megan wrote in her diary.

However, reigning Miss France-World Flora Coquerel guested in the popular TV show L’emission Pour Tous, hosted by Laurent Ruquier and aired over France TV2.

Besides Fil-Am Oscar Best Song awardee Robert John Lopez and his wife (and composing partner) Kristen Anderson, also guesting on the #Pinoy-Relief concert set for Tuesday, March 11, at the Madison Square Garden (The Theater) in New York City are Charice and Jennifer Hudson.

This is according to the additional report of Funfare’s Big Apple correspondent Edmund Silvestre.

Other performers are Fil-Am artists Jessica Sanchez, apl.de.ap. and Dante Basco, with the special appearance of Dr. Mehmet Oz, host of the Dr. Oz Show.

Edmund said that Pinoy Relief was formed last year to generate awareness, raise funds and create sustainable recovery programs for the victims and communities affected by devastating natural disasters, including victims of Supertyphoon Yolanda.
