MANILA, Philippines – Kris Aquino said there is no truth to the rumors that she will run for vice president in the 2016 presidential election.
According to recent reports, President Aquino is planning to anoint Interior and Local Government Secretary Mar Roxas as the administration party’s presidential standard-bearer for the 2016 elections, with Kris as his vice presidential running mate.
But during her ABS-CBN late night talk show “Aquino & Abunda Tonight†on Tuesday, the TV host-actress said the possibility of her running for office in 2016 has “never been discussed.â€
“No truth. Huwag sila gumawa ng intriga kasi hindi talaga totoo,†she said. “No plans, has not been discussed, is not on the table.â€
When asked by her program co-host Boy Abunda if she’s aware there have been talks about her aspiring for government office, Kris acknowledges that politics is in her blood.
“Pero at this point in my life—and, categorically, kaya ko magsalita ng patapos—sa 2016, it’s not yet my time,†she said.
Aside from her brother, current Philippine President Benigno Aquino III, a number of Kris’ relative are or were in public office, notably her mother, the late former President Corazon Aquino.
But TV host hinted she is not dismissing the possibility of running for office in the future.
“Let’s talk about 2019,†Kris quipped.
“For 2016 I’ll do what Noy did. Naghintay siya, di ba? Mom stepped down in ’92. He did not seek election until, if I’m not mistaken, ’98. So, sundan ko na lang ang yapak niya.â€
Talks about Kris running for office has been going around since her brother was elected President in 2010. In an interview in April 2013, right before the senatorial elections that year, Archbishop Oscar Cruz said he believes Kris is being groomed to become a vice presidential candidate in 2016. In a television interview in May 2013, the “Kris TV†host said she’s open to running for a local office in a “big city.â€
