Sam shrugs off ‘competition’ with Enrique: ‘I’m happy where I’m going’

MANILA, Philippines – Sam Concepcion is aware people are pitting him against fellow ABS-CBN young star Enrique Gil.

Even though their careers seem to be navigating an intersecting path, the 21-year-old singer-actor believes there is no room for jealousy in his showbiz journey.

“Yung inggit, yun talaga ang iisipin ng mga tao pero hindi ko alam kung if there’s room for that kung gusto mo talaga matuto, kung andito ka talaga for the experience and the journey,” Sam said in a press conference on Wednesday, February 19.

Sam was asked about Enrique when he faced the entertainment press to promote “No Limitations” — his return to the concert scene after an almost five year absence. Enrique, who only shot to fame in the last few years, headlined a dance concert at the Araneta Coliseum recently. Meanwhile, his upcoming concert will be held at the Music Museum, a smaller venue compared to Araneta.

The two are also part of the upcoming ABS-CBN soap opera “Mira Bella,” where they play leading men to young star Julia Barretto.

But Sam said he does not compare his achievements to the careers of other young artists such as Enrique and Daniel Padilla, who also had a successful Araneta Coliseum concert last year.

“That’s their career. Hindi ko tinitignan yung nagawa ko in comparison to other people’s careers. Because as far as I’m concerned, I’ve done my homework. I’ve done my part and my experiences,” he said. “I’ve done my work. As far as I’m concerned, I’m happy where I’m going.”

Sam added: “Kung ano yung gusto kong gawin, nae-excite ako kasi every year I just become more and more passionate about it.”

Paolo Valenciano, the director of “No Limitations,” explained the concert is meant to be intimate, hence the venue. “Gusto ko yung mas intimate, gusto ko mas malapitan,” said Sam.

Of course, the “Mira Bella” actor also admits wanting to perform in a bigger venue in the future. But he’s taking it a step at a time.

“Kung mag-Araneta ako ngayon, today, saan pa ako pupunta next year saka next year, di ba? Mas gusto ko yung unti-unti lang tayo. We start here and then palaki nang palaki,” Sam explained.

“It has been a long time since I have done a major concert, so I am very, very excited with ‘No Limitation,” he added.

“No Limitations” will be held on March 15, 7p.m., at the Music Museum in San Juan City.
