MANILA, Philippines - Name a hit Broadway musical and chances are, Rex Smith has played the lead role.
Most people know Rex for his monster hits You Take My Breath Away, Forever, Everlasting Love, Let’s Make A Memory, Speechless, Simply Jesse, etc., but only a few know his other showbiz side. He has played Marvel comics superhero Daredevil in the big screen, played lead in the hit TV series Street Hawk and co-hosted with Marilyn Mcoo the long-running music TV series Solid Gold.
At the start of Rex’s Broadway career, he appeared as Jesus Christ in Jesus Christ Superstar, Danny Zuko in Grease and as Joseph in Joseph and the Technicolor Dream Coat. As he matured, he played Tony in West Side Story then the lead role opposite.
Linda Ronstadt in Pirates of Penzance where former US Pres. George W. Bush raved about his performance. His Broadway star shone brighter and was cast in two long-running Andrew Lloyd Webber musicals — Sunset Boulevard and Phantom of the Opera as the Phantom. Before embarking on his current Valentine tour, Rex played Captain Von Trapp in Rogers & Hammerstein’s The Sound of Music.
The Valentine concert tour won’t be his breather from Broadway because highlighted in the tour are excerpts from Grease, Phantom of the Opera and Sound of Music. Rex will be supported by great Pinoy performers like Olivia Rocha who will portray Christine in the Phantom medley and Lara Cuevas in Grease.
Rex, of course, will sing all the songs that brought him to fame plus fun songs like Build Me Up Buttercup, Everybody Have Fun Tonight and more. Rex’s special guests are the fabulous Mark Mabasa and friends. Showtime is at 8 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 16, at the Grand Ballroom of Solaire Resort & Casino.
