Megan Young: ‘Representing my country is a big thing’

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines – Miss World 2013 Megan Lim Young was warmly welcomed Thursday night, Oct. 10, during her homecoming presscon.

“62 years we waited for the elusive blue crown,” said Cory Quirino, who is the Chairman and CEO of Miss World Philippines.

“History has been made, destiny has been accomplished and now we have our first Miss World, Megan Lim Young.”

As for Megan, everything is still surreal for her.

“While I was in Indonesia, I still couldn’t believe I have that nametag Philippines and a sash that says Philippines,” she quipped.

Yet, what’s more important for her is to bring the country honor as she took home—for the first time in history of Philippine beauty pageants— the Miss World title.

“It’s a great honor to represent the country itself, fulfilling that dream of being the girl who represents Philippines,” said Megan.

“Being Miss World now, having my country behind me, representing my country, it’s a big thing,” she added.

Having the motto of “Beauty with a purpose,” Megan will be busy with her tasks as Miss World 2013, which include reaching out to the less privileged.

“It’s a huge responsibility on my shoulders kasi nire-represent ko ‘yong mga Pilipino pagdating sa mga gawain, pag-uugali, in the eyes of this people, kung sino ang Pilipinas, ako ‘yon pagdating sa international arena,” she said.

“And I’m happy, I’m very happy that I got to represent the Philippines,” Megan added.

They will be assisting the Philippine General Hospital, and will work hand-in-hand with Fr. Rocky Evangelista of Tulay Foundation.

Now that we have the title, many wonder if it will be possible for our country to host the Miss World beauty pageant in the coming years.

Quirino is very positive about this, saying she’s already laying out a plan for it.

“We have a scheduled meeting with DOT (Department of Tourism) this week or next week. So we’re working on that,” Quirino said.

Another thing is since we have the title now, some think that the Miss World Philippines Inc. will be stricter in choosing the candidates.

â€œWe have the crown now. We don’t need to prove anything anymore,” said Quirino

Megan is like the gauge now when considering a candidate for the Miss World beauty pageant. So here’s her advice for all aspiring beauty queens: “At this day of age, being a beauty queen is not only about the looks or being beautiful.

“You had to have your purpose because being a beauty queen is a big responsibility,” she ended.
