MANILA, Philippines - In the possession of Rick, Corey, "Old Man" and "Chumlee" are five Olympic medals, Superbowl rings, and a gold medal from Pele's last world cup in 1970.
A combination of broad knowledge on historical facts, an eye for value, and more importantly, top-notch negotiating skills enabled these stars of the popular History show "Pawn Stars" to collect these items and more in their
family-run Las Vegas pawnshop.
During the Manila leg of their Asian tour, father and son Rick and Corey shared some wisdom in their collective 28 years in the business.
When it comes to negotiating, Rick says that one has to be willing to walk away because that's the easiest way of losing a negotiation.
An interesting fact about Rick is that since "Pawn Stars" became a hit, he has been shooed away from garage sales and swap meets because people are worried of his shrewd negotiating skills.
Corey shares that people should think twice before throwing old items out because it might be worth something "and there's a chance that it might be on 'Pawn Stars' someday."
Sentimental items, Rick says, are hard to give value to because it differs from one person to another.
"You have to remember that in the end, it's just stuff," Rick adds. "You sell if if you think it can support your family, which is more important than an old ring or an old football."
The two may be first-timers in the country but Richard "Old Man" Harrison has actually been to the Philippines according to son Rick.
"Old Man" has a tattoo on his back, which he got in the Philippines in 1960. The tattoo is often the cause of quarrel between him and his wife because the artist got the spelling wrong.
"Married for 55 years and they still fight about it," Rick says.
"Pawn Stars" premiered in 2009 on History and its viewership has grown through the years as fans of the show continue to be drawn by three generation of Harrisons and their friend Austin "Chumlee" Russell's ability to haggle over memorabilia and collectibles.
“Pawn Stars†Asia Tour was made possible through partners Department of Tourism, Fairmont Hotel, Glorietta, Holiday Inn & Suites, and Raffles Hotel.
New episodes of "Pawn Stars" can be seen on History every Monday at 10PM. History is available on Cablelink Ch 43, Cignal Ch 118, Dream Satellite Ch 30, Destiny Cable Ch 57, Skycable Ch 67 and other cable operators in the Philippines.
