MANILA, Philippines - We often hear the line, “breastfeeding is still best for babies up to two years old.†But do we really understand why? This month, MedTalk joins the Department of Health in promoting breastfeeding among mothers. A study by the UNICEF revealed that out of almost seven million children (below five years old), 87 percent were never breastfed. The figure also includes infants whose breastfeeding may have lasted for only an hour, a day, or only for a week. Research shows that prolonged breastfeeding (for at least six months) increases the child’s immunity against diseases. In this episode, we will tackle in detail how exclusive breastfeeding can shield a child from various diseases including pneumonia, lymphoma and even leukemia.
