Jasmine Curtis-Smith steps out of sister Anne’s shadow with acting award

MANILA, Philippines - Jasmine Curtis-Smith feels she has finally set herself apart from sister Anne Curtis with her win as Best Supporting Actress for her role in the film “Transit” in the 9th Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival.

When she first entered the entertainment industry as a Kapatid actress, Jasmine was often compared to her big sister Anne. In previous press interview, Jasmine said comparisons with the Kapamilya actress was not an issue for her. Now, she’s glad her decision to venture into independent cinema allowed her to show she’s more than just Anne’s younger sister.

“That shows how different we are as actresses and as personalities of this industry,” Jasmine told members of the press after the 9th Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival awards night at the Cultural Center of the Philippines in Pasay City on Sunday, August 4.

She added, “I’m glad that even in this small way — it’s not even small, it’s such a grand thing for me — naipapakita ko na magkaiba kami ni ate.”

Jasmine said the indie movie allowed her to do something Anne hasn’t done before.

“Yes, we’re both in the entertainment industry. But here we go, ito na yung maibibigay ko that she hasn’t tackled before. It’s a positive thing for me,” she said.

The Kapatid actress didn’t expect she’ll win an award for her first film.

“I texted my mom, she’s probably asleep in Australia. My ate (Anne) texted me. All my friends, all my fans tweeted me. I’m just so thankful and so blessed,” she shared.

“I didn’t expect this. I didn’t even expect to be getting a film from Cinemalaya. That was enough for me. So winning this award, I’m over the moon,” Jasmine added.
