The many faces of Nelson Mandela in film

Dexter Rodrigo Matilla - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - As Nelson Mandela, one of the most iconic political figures in history, celebrates his 95th birthday, we look at the many portrayals of the charismatic leader who helped put an end to apartheid in South Africa.

Born Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela in July 18, 1918, "Madiba" has received numerous awards and tributes from musicians and his profile is a common subject of artists.

In film, Mandela has been portrayed four times with two more films coming out later this year. All films take a look at the different aspects in the different moments of Mandela's life.

Sidney Poitier was the first to play the role of Mandela in the 1997 television film "Mandela and de Klerk".

Ten years later, Dennis Haysbert would take up the mantle in "Goodbye Bafana" which follows the story of Mandela's white South African prison guard.

It was then English actor David Harewood's turn in the 2009 BBC televevision film "Mrs. Mandela".

That same year, Morgan Freeman played the role of South Africa's first black president in "Invictus", which also starred Matt Damon as Francois Pienaar. It was directed by Clint Eastwood.

Idris Elba, who recently appeared in "Pacific Rim" will then portray Mandela in the biographical film "Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom".

Another film set to come out is "Winnie", which actually premiered in 2011 during the Toronto Film Festival. It received poor reviews despite praises for the performance of Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson. Terrence Howard is this film's Mandela.
