Born Impact goes to Indonesia

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The GMA 7 show features Bali’s gigantic Sunfish, the world’s largest bony fish

In recent months, news of a monstrous fish found on Philippine shores sparked public interest.  In Cebu, General Santos and Zamboanga, there have been sightings of the giant fish called “mola mola” or sunfish. But what is this strange-looking animal and where does it dwell? Why are we finding them on our shores instead of under the sea?

The Born Impact team traveled to Indonesia to document giant manta rays. Little did they know that apart from manta rays, another underwater giant can be found in Bali’s waters. In a stunning video documentation by an Indonesian diver, the massive sunfish can be seen swimming solo and in a group.

Larger than a human being, the sunfish is the world’s largest bony fish. Its name is derived from its “basking” behavior — yes, this giant fish is a sunbather! But some experts fear that changing water temperatures and pollution may be driving marine animals like the sunfish onto the shore.

Born Impact airs Sundays after AHA! on GMA 7.
