MANILA, Philippines - Sen. Loren Legarda expressed elation over the recent triumph of Nora Aunor for her powerful portrayal of a Badjao midwife in the Brillante Mendoza opus Thy Womb in the recently-concluded Seventh Asian Film Awards in Hong Kong.
“I congratulate Ms. Nora Aunor as well as Mr. Eddie Garcia for their best actress and best actor awards. This only proves that Filipino thespians are talented and are at par with the best in the region. As a Filipino, I take pride in their achievements,†Legarda said.
“The movie Thy Womb did not only showcase the acting talent of Ms. Aunor but also depict the struggles of the Badjaos and reveal new facets of their plight and the unique struggles of women,†she said.
Last March 15, the senator arranged a special screening of Thy Womb at the Podium to enable more people to witness the movie, which she describes as a creative and fearless contribution to Filipino filmmaking.
Legarda expressed hope that the continued exposure of the plight of indigenous peoples through film would result in more support for them and the recognition they deserve.
