A chip off the old block

The son of Lerrie Pangilinan, 8-time Tawag ng Tanghalan champion in the ’50s, is a singer with his own style, a performer with his own passion, an artist with a cause

MANILA, Philippines - Val Pangilinan Villar ceases to be just the son of Tawag ng Tanghalan eight-time champion in the ’50s, Lerrie Pangilinan. He is a singer with his own style, a performer with his own passion, a concert artist with his own cause.

Val will take his audience back to the ‘80s and ‘90s then mesmerize them with contemporary R&B and OPM songs in his concert The Voice: Val Villar in Concert Take 2 on March 30 at the Hollywood Celebrity Center. Val will also pay tribute to the three great Michaels of the music industry: Michael Jackson, Michael Bublé and Michael Franks. Special guests are Evien Obracevic, Edna Villar, Lerrie Pangilinan, Lianna Gutierrez, Gemmalyn Crosby and more surprise guests.

In preparation for the concert that will be directed by Alvin Reyes, Val spends two hours at the gym daily, rehearses four songs a day, observes proper diet and gets enough rest. More than 400 are expected to watch the concert that will benefit the GanoCares foundation and victims of Typhoon Pablo that badly hit the Philippines.

Val was in the wireless business for 12 years and is now the CEO of VCafe under Gano Excel. His clients include Sprint, Nextel, Los Angeles World Airports, Miller Coors Brewing Company, Worley Parsons, Parsons, FEDEX, Food Distibutors and about 3,000 more customers.

He started in the music industry in the late ’80s. He was a member of the boy band Adobo and the singing group Altered Rhythm. Today, Val sings R&B and ballads at The Promenade @ VisionCafe, a Filipino-owned and operated coffee bar/warehouse in Irwindale, California that distributes Gano Coffee Products.

Val’s band includes Tateng Katindig on keyboards; Ner de Leon, saxophone; Myke Gonzaga, guitars; Jerry Cruz, bass; George Rossi, percussions; and Dave Anderson, drums.

The concert playlist also includes songs of Val’s favorite artists Luther Vandross, Brian Mcknight and Gary Valenciano. Tickets are priced at $20 (general admission) and $40 (VIP). Gano Gourmet Coffee is also part of the event.

Before the concert, Val received a citation from the Image Awards in Fashion, Beauty and Leadership in Hollywood last Jan. 6 and performed with models at the Body Shots International on March 3.
