Richard is Rated R

Leah C. Salterio - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - He started performing when he was only seven, displaying his innate talent as a singer and child actor. Young as he was then, Richard Merk already proved that music has undoubtedly become a significant part of his life.

Through the years, Richard came to be known as the undisputed “Prince of Jazz.” His passion for performing has not waned, as he continues to sing regularly at Merk’s Place, the restaurant and music bar he put up with his better-half, Roni Tapia-Merk.

However, Richard is not just singing this time. Recently, he was given a chance to be heard on radio as host of his own program, Rated R, on Energy FM 106.7. The radio show airs every Saturday from 3 to 6 p.m.

Rated R features words and music, done Richard’s inimitable way. He does interviews with personalities as his guests for the week and plays their songs within the three-hour show to highlight their stint.

It is not Richard’s first time to host a radio show. When he was younger, he was heard on Operetang Putol-Putol, then a popular radio program on DZXL with Espie Fabon, Edgar Mortiz, Nora Aunor, Perla Adea and the late Jay Ilagan.

Richard, however, is definitely pleased to return to radio. He is thankful for the chance to be heard on air again, not just as a singer but host of Rated R on Energy FM.

He is out to share his views, opinions, ideas and with listeners. Joining him is Django Tango.

Dream FM recently engaged the services of the team of Energy FM, managed and operated by the Ultrasonic Broadcasting System, Inc. (UBSI). Energy FM, then broadcasting from 91.5 FM, has been credited as the “Top 5 Most Listened To FM Stations in Metro Manila.”

Led by Rebecca Ann Sy, chairperson of UBSI, Energy FM on Dream 106.7 is out to grow as a really compelling brand. Rebecca looks at this engagement as challenging and with great optimism. She is confident that her team can replicate Energy FM’s success and make the station as among the fastest growing media brands.

Meanwhile, Richard continues his performances even after the Valentine’s season — when he did shows with Emcy Corteza-Faustino and lawyer Ferdie Topacio (Save Your Heart for Me); Henry Katindig and Jeannie Tiongco (My Cherie Amour) at Merk’s Place.

Yesterday, Richard was among the performers in the International Jazz Festival, with Mon David and Arthur Manuntag, at the Rockwell Tent. In May, Richard will also perform with an international artist.
