MANILA, Philippines - The stage is all set for the Cultural Center of the Philippines’ and Spotlight Artists Centre’s production of Katy The Musical, to run from Jan. 17 to 27 at the CCP Little Theater (Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino).
After months of auditions, brainstorming and technical preparations, the producers finally completed the musical’s final cast, creative team and production crew. Driven by their desire to perpetuate the legacy of legendary Filipina jazz singer Katy dela Cruz, the Spotlight team spared no effort in recreating the nostalgic look, sound and feel of Manila’s vaudeville era, considered as the heyday of jazz, swing and big band music.
Isay Alvarez-Seña takes the title role, along with Tirso Cruz III, Dulce, Epi Quizon, Tricia Amper-Jimenez, Lou Veloso, Gian Magdangal and Aicelle Santos.
Rounding up the female chorus are Neomi Gonzales, Astarte Abraham, China Cojuangco, Celine Fabie, CJ Mangahis, Sheng Belmonte, Sheenly Gener and Gimbey dela Cruz. The male chorus is comprised of Poppert Bernadas, Aaron Cheng, Enteng Evangelista, Carlon Motabato, Andy Bais, Nomherlito Cipriano and JV Castillo.
Directed by Nestor Torre, Katy The Musical features original music composed by Ryan Cayabyab, interpreted live by the AMP Nonet Band under the baton of musical director Mel Villena and libretto by Jose Javier Reyes.
The production team consists of Fanny Serrano, costume designer; Junjun Villareal, lights designer; Bobot Lota, set designer and Liza Martinez, Tin Limjap and Cecile Martinez, choreographers.
Producers Carl Balita, Robert Seña and Tricia Jimenez consider Katy’s inspiring story as a fitting prelude to the legacy of Original Pilipino Music (OPM), as well as a timeless message that needs to be rekindled and passed on to younger generations.
