Ted probes PHILEX mining spills in Failon

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Ted Failon (photo) will probe on the environmental hazards caused by mining spills particularly the recent incident involving PHILEX Mining Corporation today in Failon Ngayon.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) recently suspended PHILEX due to violations of the Mining Act after its damaged tailings in Padcal, Itogon, Benguet caused a sediment flow that contaminated Balog River, all the way to San Roque Dam.

According to Itogon Mayor Oscar Camantiles, more than 34 families in the municipality have been gravely affected by the tailings spill.

Aside from investigating PHILEX, Ted will also fire at mining groups that have resumed operations despite being suspended by the DENR.

Based on the show’s report last June, six mining groups from Surigao Del Norte and Suriagao Del Sur that include Shenzou Mining Corporation, PGMC Mining Corporation, Oriental Synergy Mining Corporation and TMC Mining Corporation have been ordered by the DENR to cease operations due to violations of the Clean Water Act. When Failon Ngayon followed up the case, it turns out that the said mining groups have gone “business as usual” and ignored government order.

Failon Ngayon airs 4:45 p.m. on ABS-CBN.
